How to Play Gomoku

Objective

Be the first player to get five stones in a row — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — on a 15×15 board.

Rules

  • Black always moves first.
  • Players alternate placing one stone per turn on any empty intersection.
  • Once placed, stones cannot be moved or removed.
  • The first player to form an unbroken chain of exactly five stones wins.
  • If the board fills up with no winner, the game is a draw.

Controls

  • Click an empty intersection to place your stone.
  • Undo — take back the last move (or last two moves vs AI).
  • New Game — start a fresh round.
  • 2 Players — local two-player mode.
  • AI Easy / Hard — play against the computer.

Tips

  • Build open threes (three in a row with both ends open) — they are very hard to block.
  • Watch for your opponent's open fours and block immediately.
  • Control the center of the board for maximum flexibility.
  • Create double threats — two winning lines at once that your opponent can't both block.
