How to Play Mahjong

Mahjong is a classic tile-based game for four players. The goal is to be the first to form a complete hand of 14 tiles — typically four sets (Pungs, Chows, or Kongs) plus a pair. This version uses standard Chinese rules with 136 tiles: Characters, Bamboos, Dots, Winds, and Dragons.

Basic Actions

• Chi — Take the previous player's discard to complete a sequence (Chow).
• Peng — Take any player's discard to complete a triplet (Pung).
• Gang — Declare four of a kind (Kong) and draw a replacement tile.
• Hu — Declare a winning hand when you complete your 14-tile hand.

Beginner Tips

• Focus on one suit early — mixed hands are harder to complete.
• Keep pairs — they're essential for the final hand.
• Watch discards — if someone discards a tile you need, they probably don't have it.
• Don't be greedy — a simple hand won quickly beats a complex hand lost slowly.
