How to Play Reversi (Othello)

Reversi, modernized as Othello, is a classic 8x8 abstract strategy board game. Bracket one or more enemy discs between your new disc and an existing disc of your color, and the whole line flips to your side. It takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master.

Core Rules

Black moves first; every move must flip at least one enemy disc.
Flipping happens in all 8 directions simultaneously.
No legal move? Your turn is passed automatically.
Game ends when the board fills or neither side can move — majority wins.

Winning Strategy

Corners are permanent — they can never be flipped.
Limit opponent mobility; force them to give you corners.
Discs adjacent to corners (X/C squares) are liabilities early on.
Being behind in disc count mid-game is often fine — the endgame flips fast.
